Best Bounce for the Buck:
A Cost-Effective Analysis of 21st Century Pogo Sticks
By Justin Iannello
Pogo sticks have been a prominent product in the toy industry for decades. They can be found in the garage of most households; an apparatus that normally bounces as high as 1-2 feet on a good day, and is mainly used to compete for consecutive jump records with neighbors and show-off to family and friends. However, many fall out of love with them because of their short life-span, they become too big for it, or they suddenly lose interest because it’s labeled as a “kids’ toy”. Sticks of this category still exist, but others known as pogo sticks on “steroids” have revolutionized the description of a pogo stick.
With the turn of the 21st century, pogo sticks have become more technical, robust and powerful. They hit the market with a mean, new look and feel. At first glance, the price tag accompanying these sticks will cause eye-popping behavior. That’s because these aren’t just pogo sticks anymore, they are machines.
Today, research and development, marketing and customer service have been bigger than ever. There is increased demand for new extreme sports such as Xpogo, new and exciting health/fitness endeavors, and a hobby for people to enjoy in their stressful lives. More experienced jumpers acknowledge the value of these innovated products and jump on every opportunity to be first in line. Below are the results of a consensus gathered on www.xpogo.com as to what members feel are the most cost-effective pogo sticks on the market today:
Figure 1. Bryan Pognant grinds a rail on the Super Pogo.
GOLD: In a dominating victory, the Super Pogo (an upgraded version of the formally known Gravity Games) received 47% of the votes. Listed at $79, it features a single, large spring and is the closest you will get to the traditional pogo stick. Yet, don’t be fooled. This stick is possibly the most versatile ride out there. It isn’t as powerful as a Vurtego, Flybar, Motostik or Power Pogo, ranging at approximately 3-4 feet in height potential, but offers multiple dimensions of jumping (see Figure 1). It is a solid workout, great for technical jumping and its durability far outweighs its cost. It weighs in at 12 pounds. It also falls in a nice range for weight and height requirements. Proceed to www.pogosticks.com for further information and purchase.
Figure 2. Brian Spencer, co-owner of Vurtego, displays the height potential by sticking a Wall Plant.
SILVER: Our runner-up winner is the Vurtego series receiving 21% of the votes. It offers three models: Pro, Custom and FIT. While it is on the higher end of cost at $299-$329, our members believe it is more than worth its price. Built on a vastly improved air-pressure system, this stick offers perhaps the most explosive feel and powered flight. I’ve witnessed jumpers clearing as high as 7 feet and the potential for maximum height is virtually infinite (see Figure 2). Jumpers control height potential by adjusting psi (a unit for measuring grades of air pressure), so if your not quite ready for that power, you can always limit the height potential. It weighs in at approximately 12 pounds and newer models will weigh in at around 9 pounds. The Vurtego also fits any individual regardless of weight and height, and serves as a great alternative to gym work. Proceed to www.vurtego.com for further information and purchase.

BRONZE: Receiving 17% of our votes was the Flybar 800. It is a very similar model to the Flybar 1200, except almost half as light (12 pounds), quieter and upgraded. For those who don’t know, it’s built on a rubber-band system and offers a “trampoline like” feel. In this case, the Flybar 800 has 8 bands as opposed to 12. Listed at $199, this stick offers potential for at least 4 feet of air. Jumpers can also control their height potential by selecting how many rubber-bands they want engaged. This permits more ease and comfort for performing tricks and enjoying a healthy workout. It also fits in a nice range for height and weight requirements. Proceed to www.flybar.com for further information and purchase.
It is easy to ignore some of the more quality made sticks because of their cost. First, let me assure you that I don’t work for any of these manufacturers. Second, these rides are more intense, durable, energetic and fun than ever. Yes, these pogo sticks may be much more expensive, but their value will prove worthy over the long-term.
Other sticks that received votes: 8% for Motostik ($189 - $199) and 4% for Power Pogo X ($179).
*Always remember to wear protective gear when you jump. In addition, periodic checkups and proper care is essential to ensure your safety and life-span of your pogo stick.
